December Sling Meet – New Venue / Day / Time! November 24, 2008
Posted by oxfordslingmeet in General.add a comment
Oxford Sling Meet in December will take place on THURSDAY December 4th
at St. Lukes Church on Canning Cresent (OX1 4XB).
The meeting will open at 10am and finish at 11.30am.
We are really pleased that the last couple of meets have been so
successful, we’re delighted to have so many of you attending and it’s
great to see lots of new faces. In order to meet everybody’s needs, we
are making some changes to the
way the meeting is run. There are so many people coming now, and so
many library hires to deal with, that we need to structure the
meetings a little more. Instead of helping many of you on a one to one
basis, we will do a few group demos.
10:00 – Doors open
10:30 – Group Demo – Structured Carrier
10:45 – Group Demo – Stretchy Wrap
11:00 – Group Demo – Ring Sling
- Library hires start
11:15 – Other Demo (more on that below!)
11:30 – Meeting finishes
It would be very helpful if you could return any borrowed library
items before 10:30 so that we can make sure they are available for
someone else to hire, and complete the necessary paperwork. There will
be a table where you can put them.
There is a little bit of spare time at 11:15 for an extra demo or
group discussion. This can be something completely different – let us
know if there is something of particular interest to you! If there are
lots of suggestions then we will run a poll. Or, if you have something
that you would like to demonstrate, then let us know! ![]()
For example:-
- Using a podaegi
- Rebozo carries with a short wrap
- Babywearing coats
- Sewing your own sling
We are also reducing the room hire donation to £1 per person starting
in December.
We are planning a little Sling Meet Christmas Party too! But we will
send a separate email about that in the next couple of days.
We look forward to seeing you in December!
Happy International Babywearing Week! November 15, 2008

International Babywearing Week is upon us already!
The dance class on Wednesday was a great success and everyone had a lot of fun. Thanks so much to Chloe for leading the class. Pics will be posted after the weekend!
On Sunday 16th November at 2.00 pm we have Oxford Babywearing Parade – it’ll be a walk in the park! We meet at the North Lodge entrance to Oxford University Parks (corner of Parks Road and Norham Gardens, approx 15 minute walk from town centre). We will walk from there through some of the more scenic bits of Oxford, then head up the Cowley Road to Magdalen Road Church for tea and cakes from about 3.15 until 4.30. We will be walking whatever the weather – umbrellas at the ready!
Everyone is welcome, especially dads, and it is free of charge. Everyone who joins us will also be entered into a national sling meet prize draw – there are some great prizes up for grabs!
Oxford Sling Meet in the News! November 15, 2008

On 5th November we had our sling meet in the new location of South Oxford Community Centre. It was a really busy meet, but the larger venue seemed to work well! We will be having the December meet somewhere different again, and then decide which works best. All details will of course be posted up here!
The Oxford Mail newspaper came along to our meeting to report about us and about International Babywearing Week! Here we are on the website!!

We have loads of news for you at the moment!
The November meeting will take place on Friday 7th November at 10-12. However, we are moving to a new, bigger venue this month! In November, the meeting will take place at South Oxford Community Centre in the Lower Hall. You can find more info about how to get there here.
International Babywearing Week runs from 12-18 November 2008. There will be events running all over the world – you can find out all about it here!
We have some great events planned in Oxford too!
On Wednesday 12th November there will be a babywearing dance class at Donnington Community Centre at 11am. Wear something comfy and bring your favourite sling – this should be a lot of fun! And of course toddlers can dance along with us too. Donnington Doorstep Family Centre will welcome us for lunch if you fancy it afterwards.
On Sunday 16th November we are planning a walk through Oxford starting in town and finishing at Magdalen Road Church Hall for a tea party between 3:30-4:30. We will publish the route in the next couple of weeks. Come and join us, and bring your cameras!
We will keep the site updated with all the other events we are planning, so do check back soon!

I borrowed the Bara Barn shawl from the sling library this week, and
am having so much fun with it that I just had to share!
It is a 2.7m wrap (also known as a rebozo or shortie). My daughter
Emma is 19 months old now. We both still love to wrap and try out new things,
so I set myself a challenge today to only use this one carrier, but in as many ways as possible.
So here is what we have come up with so far today…
Nursing in a rebozo hip carry – we also used this for popping to the shops this morning.

Rebozo hip carry
A rebozo back carry – perfect for doing a bit of work around the house with a sleepy toddler! This is a one shouldered back carry with a slip knot. You start with the traditional rebozo hip carry, and just scoot the child around to your back. You need to tighten up a bit more afterwards. It is surprisingly comfortable!

Rebozo back carry
For a longer carry, we did a rucksack tied under the bum. (Known as ruck under bum or RUB). I love this as an alternative to a ruck with a longer wrap, and sometimes it is nice to not have loads of wrap tied around your waist.

Finally, more snuggles and nursing in a hip carry before an afternoon nap.

Oh and the great thing about using a shortie… it doesn’t look bad as a scarf (or a blanket) when it isn’t being used as a sling!

Phew – what a great meet we had today!! So many new faces – it was really fantastic. I don’t have the numbers yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was our busiest meet yet.
As usual, we had a lot of demos – Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC) with a woven wrap, Pocket Wrap Cross Carry (PWCC) using a stretchy wrap with a newborn, back carrying with the Ergo, mei tai back carries…. and probably loads that I have forgotten!
There was some interest in learning to use a woven wrap for back carries, so we will try to do more of that next month.
For now though, here are some pictures!

All kinds of carriers!

August Sling Meet – It’s going to be a hot one! July 27, 2008

The August meet will take place at Rose Hill Childrens Centre on Friday 1st August 10am-noon.
It is easily accessible on the no. 4 (red) or no. 3 (blue) buses and it’s normally ok for parking. For directions have a look at their website www.rosehill-littlemore.childrencentre.org.
The Oxfordshire Sling Library will be there, and you can now have a look at what is in the library and see if there is something you would like to borrow! All details are here.
It might be a hot one if this weather continues, but there is plenty of outside space in the playroom if freshair is needed. Perhaps it would be good to swap tips on babywearing in hot weather this month!
